Working as an intern at Creating Magic Vacations, I designed print collateral and branded a conference that needed to feel aspirational without being generic. The challenge was standing out in a saturated travel market while staying on-brand across very different formats.

While working here I learned how to design around visual systems set up by these companies and had access to their library of pictures and type faces. I ended up creating three logos, five posters, name tags and table banners in this half a year internship.

Approach

Work with the ceo directly to gain feedback on designs and work around her critique to get the designs to where she wanted. Working without other designers was a challenge and made me appreciate the collaborative nature of graphic design even more.

These designs were very restricted with type faces and photos that could be used as they had to be licensed for the conference. Working around this and applying past design choices by the company, I was able to create a cohesive brand for the conference.

Approach

Outcome

The final outcome was super successful and really validating for me as a designer. All day I was able to walk around Disney World's Contemporary resort and see people wearing the nametags I designed.

The conference was finished in time and the logo I designed was all over the conference room because the conference was built around the idea of "elevate". This made my design centered to the whole conference and really showed me the importance of good design.

Reflection

This project was such a learning experience for me as a designer. It was the first big project I was tasked with and I was able to deliver as the solo designer. Throughout this process however, I learned how much I need to value the designers around me and how much I appreciate the collaborative nature of design.

Working on a team of designers will always bring the best out of the individual designer because ideas become stale. The difference between good design and great design is greatly impacted by collaboration and this job really emphasized that.
