Illustrations & Drawings

A collection of hand-drawn work that sits at the core of my practice. Illustration is where I start most ideas, it's how I think through composition, line, and mood before anything goes digital.

Blurred building with columns and central structure

This work of a skeleton is done with charcoal observationally on 24" x 36" newsprint paper. The charcoal is applied with vine charcoal and smoothed out with a paintbrush. This study was done for figure drawing II at the University of Tampa. I have extensive practice drawing from both figures like this and live models.

Skull Study

This drawing was made to study the structure of the skull and form. The skull features a paper bag on its head in this image. This work is also made in charcoal on 24" x 36" newsprint paper.

My main focus when creating one of these studies is accuracy. To ensure accuracy I measure everything to the firs thing I draw and lay out a contour line underdrawing first. I find it very important to get a good underdrawing or sketch down first before moving on to capturing any value because accuracy is so important when it comes to making a drawing look convincing.

The charcoal allows me to push highlights and shadows as well as get smooth gradients.

Self Portrait

This work was done as a study of portraiture and also done from observation through a mirror and done in pencil on 18" x 24" drawing paper. Drawing self portraits is especially hard for me because I know what I look like and 100% accuracy is needed for it to look at all like me in the end.

This was a break from the charcoal studies shown above and done using hatching with graphite pencils. This allows me to more accurately lay down my material for more life-like shadows

Animation

This was my first attempt at animating anything done for a digital illustration class at the University of Tampa. The animation was rendered on adobe animate and all of the frames were drawn on adobe photoshop. The stylized faces move around in a sphere where they are all attached. I would love to revisit animation now that I have a better understanding of the software and the movement of characters.
